You can bike with live trainers, who control the resistance level remotely – or simply choose a scenic ride. Detailed Review of the NordicTrack Commercial VR21 Recumbent Exercise Bike
When you compare this bike to the cheap and nasty ‘no brand’ equipment that proliferates today, the size difference is striking. The VR21 is 155cms long, 59cms wide and 132cms high to the top of the back lit console.
It weighs in at a sturdy 48kgs. The maximum user weight is listed at 125kgs (around 19 stone). Keep in mind that all manufacturers tend to be cautious with these recommendations. NordicTrack are known for great service and generous warranties. This one is no different, with 5 years for the frame and 2 years full coverage for parts and labour. Note that you need to kick off your warranty by registering your purchase within 28 days.
This bike has a big 9kg flywheel, which works through 25 different digital resistance levels. You can control the resistance via the console – no need to stop and turn a dial like you do with other brands.
NordicTrack Technology for a Mid-Range Price
You get a lot of technology with NordicTrack fitness equipment – and the VR21 combines them with comfort (see below).
The biggest boost to your workouts will come from iFit. This is a training app, with recorded and live sessions, group training, social elements, and maps. It is amazing. You get 1 month free with purchase. You can use it via Bluetooth using your own phone or tablet.
iFit is not the only app which will work. You can use many rival apps – or simply work out with the backlit electronic display.

Comfort and Useability for NordicTrack Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Recumbent bikes give you a solid workout, though miss the discomfort that you get with folding bikes or studio style bikes. Key here is the adjustable seat. This looks great – with a mesh design. It is flexible in height and distance from the pedals. It is also padded, no need to get a sore butt while you train!
This is not the only extra for comfort. The pedals are wider than average, grip your feet and have fully adjustable straps.
This bike uses ‘Step Through’ design. You will notice with NordicTrack equipment that they test with users before releasing new products – if a bike is not super-easy to step into and step out from – then it would not get released. It has wheels on the front. While I would not be too happy moving it frequently, at least you have the option to pick it up from the back and wheel it around.
Finally, for comfort, there are handlebars (with the EKG monitor) either side of the seat.
Feedback: What Users of the VR21 Recumbent Exercise Bikes Said?
The fan got mentioned for this model. That AutoBreeze fan is used on most of the latest NordicTrack kit – though rarely gets individual mentions. The comfort also came in for praise on some sites. Assembly caused one or two grumbles (this covers all brands, some people just hate putting things together), though most feedback said this was easy.
One negative mentioned the size, I’m really not sure how tall this person was – as this recumbent is far bigger than most rival products.
Overall, positive feedback for this bike – which is in line with the rest of the VR series and other exercise bikes from NordicTrack.
