Comparing Yoga Mats That You Can Buy Online

Let’s face it, getting that sweat out of communal mats is next to impossible. For a small investment, you can have your own yoga mat – and a decent quality one could last you for years.

For some people, a look at the different yoga mats available turns a simple idea into something more complex.

There are a lot of choices. These range from ‘no brand’ basic mats, to extra thick ones (do you need those extra millimetres?), cool carry bags – and even mats with unique designs.

This article looks at the most important aspect of choosing a yoga mat, the feedback left by buyers at the different online shops. Sure, there are one or two glowing reviews of just about every item. When the comments accumulate, you can get a much better idea of the strengths and drawbacks of individual products.

Here is what you will find on this page:

  • First of all, a table. This shows the best seller in each of 3 categories – along with a short summary and link to check out the feedback for yourself.
  • For those who want to understand the different features (non-slip, cleanable, soft, design, carry etc) then the next section explores those.
  • After that I have gone into more detail (including some feedback snippets) for the best-selling mats.

Best Regular Yoga Mat – The Proworks Padded Mat with Carry Handle

Most Popular Yoga MatBased on the feedback from previous buyers, this Proworks mat is great value. It comes with a carry strap, is 10mm thick (not quite the padded ones, though thicker than the standard 6mm), and is 183x 60cm – the standard dimensions for Yoga or Pilates.

You get a choice of colours, and while the pictures on the amazon.co.uk product page look a little shiny, the effect is more matt than gloss. It does not slip, and is easy to clean – being made of foam.

What shines through in the buyer feedback is that this is a value buy. It is not the thickest, most beautiful or highest-tech may you’ll find – though it is a value-end robust option that is great for most people!

You can check out the colour options and read the (mostly short!) feedback from previous buyers for yourself on this dedicated amazon.co.uk product page.

Best Luxury Yoga Mat – Plyopic All in One Studio Mat / Towel Combo

Luxury Yoga Mat PlyopicWhat I like about the top end items in this category is that they will not cost you an arm and a leg. The Plypoic mat uses innovative technology to combine a towel and mat in the same product. This is not only versatile to use – it can be popped into the washing machine just like a regular towel.

The designs are spectacular. These are bright, colourful and abstract – verging on psychedelic in some cases. These are designed not to fade with repeated washing.

Designed to cope with Bikram Yoga and other sweaty exercise, this is a very thick product. It clocks in at 180cm x 65cm x 3.5cm. It is made with microfibre (which is the absorbent part) and rubber (which grips the floor). This is a little heavier than some mats, weighing in at 2.4kgs.

An extra bonus for ecologically minded buyers – each time you buy one, a tree gets planted!

Looking at the buyer feedback, the words ‘excellent’ and ‘delighted’ appear regularly – and almost all buyers left 5 stars… This is very unusual at amazon!

Best Eco-Friendly Yoga Mat – Healthyoga Non-Slip

Non-Slip Healthyoga MatThis is not the only eco-friendly product in this category, though this one has gathered amazing feedback (even from self-proclaimed ‘never comment’ people) and ticks the boxes for eco-friendliness too.

The Healthyoga non-slip is a basic mat, it is 6mm thick, thick – which is the standard for thinner products. It is 183 cms long by 65 cms wide. This mat is made of TPE, which is a mix of plastics and rubber, its eco credentials have been certified. It contains no latex, PVC or other harmful chemicals. A double-layer system is used to create each mat, which adds to the comfort (and non-slip characteristics).

You can choose from 4 colours, which have muted tones. These are grey, green, blue and dark pink (I’m probably not doing the description of the colours justice, they look very smart… check out the product page and see them for yourself!).

This is a little more expensive than a regular mat. What you are paying for is the non-toxic construction and the fact this comes from an established Yoga specialist, with more than 10 years of experience making products.

Feedback is very positive for this one… I get the feeling that Healthyoga has a lot of dedicated fans.

You can read the comments for yourself, and check out the designs on this dedicated amazon.co.uk product page.

Best Thicker Basic Yoga Mat – XN8

Budget Yoga MatI’m including this one to cover those readers that prefer a thicker (15mm) mat, though do not want to shell out for one of the luxury / design brands. Judging by the number of comments left from verified buyers, there are a good few people in this category.

This is a regular mat, and despite the description being in Italian, ticks all the right boxes. It is 182cm x 60cm x 1.5cm, and weighs in at a respectable 1.2kgs. It has a ribbed top surface and non-slip bottom. This is a wipe-clean type product. XN8 list Yoga, Pilates and Meditation among the uses – along with ‘general fitness’.

As you’d expect, nobody in the comments was overwhelmed or gushing about a product like this. That feedback is very much on the positive side with ‘good’, ‘big’ and ‘soft’ appearing repeatedly from different buyers.

If you prefer a thicker mat, check out this dedicated amazon.co.uk product page.

Features of Yoga Mats – Checklist

If you are still wondering whether you shell out a bit more for a luxury mat, or stick with a budget one – or just how thick your mat should be – then this section is for you. I have covered the main factors which separate products.

As with other fitness equipment, what I suggest is that you quickly scroll down this list – diving into ‘important for me’ and ‘not important’. Once you have those in mind, your choice of mat type will be a lot clearer.

#1 Thickness:

The standard is thin, 6mm mats were the only option for many years. The advantage is that these are easy to roll up and lightweight to carry. This is enough to give you some padding, though if you are after some extra comfort, then you’ll need thicker mats. 15mm is the next ‘standard’ step up, though 10mm mats are around. You can even ‘go thick’ and gave a 3.5cm thick luxury product. Keep in mind that the thicker you go, the bulkier your mat will be to carry around.

#2 What Is It Made Of?

Padded towels at one end, durable rubber at the other – with all kinds of 1 and 2 substance combinations in between. Rubber is often used on the bottom of mats, and stops them from slipping around. Foam is used for the top, providing some padding. Mats with extra rubber are heavier. Some clever combinations of materials are used these days. For example, the Plyopic Luxury Mat combines the qualifies of a mat and towel. As a minimum, I recommend you make sure (from the buyer comments) that your product is no-slip. A lot of other factors can be overlooked, a mat that slips while you are using it can’t!

#3 Is It Machine Washable?

Many foam / towelling products can be popped in the washing machine between uses. The best of these dry quickly. This is a wonderful way of getting that sweat out. Non-machine washable products will often try to hide this factor by making a big play of how they are ‘wipe clean’.

#4 Eco-Friendly?

The eco footprint of some PVC or Rubber materials is high. Since it only costs a little more to get a quality product that does not use any toxic chemicals, many people will choose to go down this route.

#5 Carry Options?

Getting your Yoga mat around is much easier when you have a bag, strap or clip included. Look out for products which come with options already included, this can save extra trouble (and minor expense).

#6 Design:

A lot of choice here, some manufacturers have created amazing designs, while others stick to muted natural tones. You can also find mats with the yoga positions printed on them, a big help for beginners!

Yoga Mat Guide PageOther Types of Flooring That Work for Yoga / Pilates

You’ll find a very detailed guide on my Gym Flooring page. Here I’ll quickly summarise some of the options here.

If you have a larger area for exercise, then interlocking foam tiles are a great way to cover them. You’ll get basic foam ones and more durable rubber coated ones (which wipe clean). What I like about these is that if one gets damaged / worn or stained – you can swap it out individually. The best seller in this category is this one from York Fitness.

For those who vary their routines, a bigger rubber mat (or even more than one) is perfect. This will cost more, though you can expect them to last for years. All you need on top is a towel, and you are good to go with Yoga. There are several brands, with this one from Flatline a bestselling option.

Best Yoga Mat: Wrap Up

If you have read this far, you already know more about the different options for yoga mats than 99% of the population. It is time to make a choice!

Remember, this is not the biggest investment you’ll make – that is in the work you do for your own fitness and health. If you find your new mat is not the right one for you, then it is only a few clicks (and just a few more pounds) to add something different to your collection.

Here is the table from the start of this page once again. After reading my explanations of the different products and various features, this should now make a lot more sense.
