Five Fitness Trends for 2023

Five Fitness Trends for 2023

How Will Fitness be Different in 2023 and beyond?

While the fundamentals of fitness are constant, the fashions change – and fitness trends in 2023 will be no different.

Fitness equipment including VR headsets, advanced wearables, and genetic testing for to fine tune your diet is available to more people than ever. However hardened people get on what is the ‘best’ form of exercise, there is now an acknowledgement that everyone will benefit from both strength (resistance) training and HIIT (cardio).

This page looks at five fitness trends set to dominate in 2023. Obviously, technology takes the lead. However, there is more than just the latest gadgets to watch out for. Other changes include HIIT with a difference. There is also a bigger understanding that mental health and physical fitness are linked.

Five Fashions for Fitness: 2023 Will See More of the Following

#1 – Virtual Reality (VR) and Fitness

For some, the wearable VR headsets are a big turn-off from VR fitness. As the experience, apps and workouts become more immersive, more people are changing their minds. Alongside the novelty factor, virtual reality workouts are a lot of fun. Just make sure you have the space to work out in.

Popular VR workout systems include FitXR, Supernatural and OhShape.

With the price of headsets coming down consistently, VR workouts are sure to become more popular as we go through 2023 and beyond.

#2 – Mental Health and Physical Fitness

The biggest difference with mental health compared with a decade ago is it is now part of our daily narratives – instead of being taboo.

There is also a growing consensus that physical activity (especially outdoors) boosts our mood. The effect is twofold. First, physical activity boosts endorphins and other vital hormones and neurotransmitters. Second, physical activity is social. As social animals, those connections and enjoyment of activity with other people is a big mental boost.

Obviously, if you are suffering from any mental health issues – make sure you reach out to a professional.

#3 – Tabata Training is the Hottest Fitness Trend for 2023

Tabata Training is a form of HIIT (high intensity interval training).

While HIIT has been around for a decade or more, there have been very few takes on this outside of the mainstream. Instead of longer (2 minutes +) intervals, Tabata training shortens them significantly. You’ll do 20 intense seconds of activity, 10 seconds of rest – and repeat. That shorter format is certainly a challenge. You’ll feel the burn until you are used to it. Once the benefits start to kick-in, you’ll wonder why you rested for a full minute for all those years.

#4 – Boutique Gyms in 2023

Gyms got bigger and bigger.

They catered for everyone, and in the end, were not special for any single group of fitness fans. Que the rise of boutique gyms. You will have noticed them popping up, each one catering for specific types of fitness – or demographic. While cycling training and rowing clubs have been around for a while, boutique gyms are expanding their reach in 2023. Women-only gyms, age-range specifics and HIIT focused specialist gyms are available in cities big and small.

#5 – 2023 Fitness Trends: Awareness of Circadian Rhythm

My final fitness trend for 2023 is that people are more aware of their natural sleep cycle than ever before.

In 2023, fitness fans are learning to work with their circadian rhythm. There are three aspects to this:

  • First, the importance of sleep. If you are well rested, you’ll perform better and will be better able to resist those tempting sugary snacks.
  • Second, exercising before bed. More people are aware that a high core temperature disrupts sleep quality. They don’t exercise within 3 hours of bedtime.
  • Third, the importance of morning sun. This resets your body clock and is a great reason to move early in the day (in addition to your regular workouts).

I’m sure 2023 will be an exciting year for fitness trends – you’ll find the latest right here at Fitness Review.
