Summary: Elliptical / Cross training is the primary reason to choose the stunning FreeStride FS7i from NordicTrack. There are two other functions, a stepper and treadmill – which certainly help this stylish upright unit stand out from the crowd. The FS7i has a 7-inch screen, plus a tablet holder for an even bigger display. You use this to access the free iFit membership, which gives you live and recorded training sessions with top-level PTs.
NordicTrack packed the FreeStride FS7i Elliptical Trainers with technology and features that you simply won’t get with budget brands. You get incline, auto adjust stride-length, your trainer can change the resistance live and even a chest strap.

The FreeStride range has a more upright profile when you compare it to the rear driven SpaceSaver ellipticals from NordicTrack. The clever pivot setup at the front, and curved arms gives it a smart and modern look. This is a big machine; it weighs a full 109kgs when assembled. The dimensions are 148cms long, 75cms wide and 188cms tall.
NordicTrack are cautious with their maximum user weight recommendations. This unit shows 135kgs – that is just over twenty-one stone.
You get more than good looks with the FS7i – the warranty is also impressive. You get 2-years for all parts and labour, along with 5 years for the frame. Two notes before I get to the functionality. First, you need to register your warranty within 28 days to validate it. Second, this is a heavy item, which NordicTrack will only deliver / install at a ground floor location.
Digital resistance means you control how hard it is to use via the console. On cheap ellipticals, you need to manually adjust this by turning a dial. For the FS7i, resistance will change automatically with pre-set training programs, or your trainer will do it remotely when you are enjoying a live training workout. There are twenty-four digital resistance levels, which are powered by a full 9kg inertia-enhanced flywheel.
Along with the resistance, you can vary your workout with incline. The FreeStride 7i gives you up to 10% incline – which really helps add that extra burn.
When it comes to the tech, iFit is the biggest draw. This is a remote training app, shared by NordicTrack and Proform fitness machines. You get a long list of features, with live training with pro / celebrity personal trainers the most popular option.
There is a big library of recorded workouts too. You pick a series of them, based on your current fitness level and goals. Add in scenic workouts (Google maps-based), social functions for groups and detailed stats and you will see the appeal.
You get 1-year of iFit free with your elliptical, after that you can decide whether to continue your subscription.
Other tech includes a Bluetooth chest strap, integrated speakers, a workout fan, SMR (silent magnetic resistance), OneTouch controls, a tablet holder, and the ability to auto-adjust your stride length.
iFit feedback is hugely positive for this model. A lot of personal thanks to the trainers, along with words like ‘Awesome’ and ‘Enjoyable’. There is equally positive feedback from retailers. It is at least one person’s favourite purchase during lockdown. One confused review seems to have been referring to a treadmill – otherwise all positive.
When you consider the warranty, quality service and easy (no interest) payment options, it is clear that NordicTrack know how to look after their customers.
If you are comparing the different models in the FreeStride range, you should look at the size of the screen first. This one allows interactive coaching, though for HD quality, get the FS10i – or the big screen FS14i.
You will save a lot of money if you already have a tablet or iPad to use for the iFit training.
Overall, this 3-in-1 unit is impressive. Stepping functions are spot on, with a workable treadmill function too. It is first and foremost a commercial-quality Elliptical trainer. The FS7i adjusts, works with you as your fitness improves and will last for years.
With iFit you can boost your motivation and enjoy those workouts all the more.
