Best Curved Treadmill

Best Curved Treadmill 2023

For me, the benefits of a curved treadmill massively outweigh the extra cost compared to regular models.

You’ll find those prices vary hugely. A basic curved treadmill can be yours for under a grand, with the best brands (for commercial gyms) costing more than ten times that amount.

With 30% more calories burned, and an ergonomic, natural running posture – Curved treadmill workouts are gaining in popularity. Add versatility that traditional treadmills can’t match in terms of different workouts, and you’ll wonder why you did not switch to a curved treadmill sooner.

This page covers five of the most popular curved treadmill brands.

You’ll find models to cover all budgets (some also spread payment plans), and all levels of fitness.

Best Curved Treadmill Brands: Mini Reviews of the Top Models Available in the UK

Woodway Curve: The Original Curved Treadmill

Woodway Curve Treadmill ReviewWoodway Curve treadmills are the current iteration of the original concept for curved running machines – invented (and patented) in Germany back in 1974.

These are commercial sized and wonderfully built. They claim to burn 30% more calories than regular treadmills and have a set of exercises as well as your standard runs. Woodway Curve treadmills are manual (like most curved machines in this category). If budget is not an issue and you want the very best curved manual treadmill around, then Woodway makes for an amazing pick.

While the console is simple, don’t underestimate the versatility of the Woodway technology. Read my detailed review of this model here.

DT Bodytone Curved Folding Treadmill: Bargain Basement Smaller Model

DT Bodytone value curved manual treadmillCompared to the other curved treadmills covered here, the DT Bodytone is a serious bargain.

The obvious question is whether this is a real contender, or just a toy. I looked into DT Bodytone and found positive reviews for their (non-curved) professional treadmills in both Ireland and the USA.

This is a smaller, lighter model than the commercial level curved treadmills – weighing in at just 39kg. It lists a max speed (manually powered) of 16km / hour. While the running surface is noticeably curved, the arc is lower. You get the familiar slatted running surface and textured sides.

Uniquely, this curved treadmill folds. The console is held up by a thinner arched support – which folds over one end of your machine. A useful space-saver for what could be a bargain machine.

Keizan Curved Treadmill – A New Model with Iron Frame

Keizan Curved TreadmillThis compact curved treadmill has a tough iron frame – and a price tag way below the commercial level machines. It is made by a brand that are popular for massage and relaxation products, though I’m not sure relaxing would be the best use of the curved running surface.

In contrast to the other cheaper curved treadmill (the DT Bodytone model), you get safety arms which come out at the sides – this enables more flexibility, especially for single-leg workouts and bringing the running belt up to speed.

I also like the holder above the console which is perfect for your phone or for a smaller tablet / iPad.

The 122cm x 40.6cm belt is plenty big enough for most people.

Assault Runner Pro – Cardio to the Next Level?

Assault Runner Pro - the best curved treadmill? This curved treadmill has something all the others I reviewed miss – style!

It starts with the elevated front, an continues to the arms and console area. Like all the curved treadmills here, being manually powered is a feature – not a drawback. This is a mid-sized machine (in its category) with a 33” (almost 84cm) width. The slatted running surface and textured side make it versatile.

Assault Fitness is an American brand with a growing reputation. This curved treadmill is priced for home users (though more common in commercial gyms, this side of the pond at least).

You get Bluetooth connectivity to use the Assault Fitness app or Zwift. An onboard console will track your runs perfectly if you prefer.

I have an individual review booked for this impressive machine and will link it here once completed and published.

In the meantime, you can find the AssaultRunner Pro on this dedicated page at my go-to store for top end gym equipment – BestGymEquipment.com.

Primal Strength Pro Series Curved Treadmill

Primal Strength Curved TreadmillThe weight of the Primal Strength curved treadmill is a hefty 230kgs. When you understand that this brand produces commercial weight training / multi-gym equipment – you’ll get why sturdy is the right word.

It has a wide running belt, which is 168.6cm long and a full 48cm wide. Add six resistance levels, and angled setup which is sure to impress. Unlike the other curved treadmill brands, Primal Strength list exercises which are sure to complement any strength training session. They include sprinting, deadmill sprints, side shuffle steps, backwards running, prowler pushes, and reverse leg pulls.

While not cheap, Primal Strength equipment is one hundred percent built to last.

Pros and Cons of Curved Manual Treadmills

They key benefit of curved treadmills can be broken down into three big factors:

  • Versatility: More exercises are possible, covering more muscle groups that give you an all-round cardio workout that regular treadmills just can’t match.
  • Higher Calorie Burn: With up to 30% more calories burned minute-for-minute, you will get the most out of your time working out. (link: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5694659/ )
  • Natural Running Position: Curved treadmills are designed to mimic natural running posture in a way that regular ones can’t. This protects your joints, and lets you go faster for longer.

There are some drawbacks worth considering:

  • Price Point: These machines are expensive compared to regular (even commercial level) treadmills.
  • Not Great for Long Steady Runs: Users report that curved treadmills are optimised for intervals and sprints and are less suited to the long-slow paces that many runners enjoy.
  • Consoles: Curved running machines are manually powered, and so don’t plug into the mains. No power limits the console (no HD touchscreens). That said, you can always use your own iPad or phone.

Features List: What Makes Manual Curved Treadmills Different?

Size of the Curved Running Surface:

I look at the width of the running surface first (both for curved and regular / flat treadmills). This gives you room to manoeuvre and lowers the chance of an awkward slip when part of your foot hits the side. Of course, you want a long surface too.

Texture of the Slatted Surface:

Curved treadmills have nodules to the side, which help you gain traction when you are getting the running belt up to speed. All the models have this important feature, which should be towards the sides of each individual slat.

Textured Side Area (and Size):

Exercises on curved treadmills go way beyond running. This is why the sides are wider than for regular machines – and textured to give you good grip. You want to comfortably step onto the edges, with minimal risk of slipping off.

Resistance Levels:

Not all curved treadmills use resistance, opting to have this built into the self-powered running belt. The exception is the NNNNN curved treadmill, which lets you up the resistance covering six levels. This makes it harder to get the belt up to speed as you increase resistance levels, burning even more calories.

Overall Weight / Construction and Max User Weight:

With robust steel construction, curved treadmills are heavy items. If you need to move your machine frequently, it is important to keep this in mind. Wheels at the front will help, and I recommend leaving these treadmills in place if at all possible.

Length of Warranty:

Curved treadmill makers offer warranties, what you don’t want to be responsible for is sending one back! Look for 2 years parts and labour and opt for a brand with an excellent track record of customer support.

Arms Setup:

You’ll notice a wide range of styles when it comes to the arms and console platform between the different models. Some have arched poles which can be folded flat, while others have bigger arms which come out either side for extra support and safety. I prefer the longer arm version, though if space is at a premium, a model that folds will get the job done.

Electronic Console:

Curved treadmills don’t have the flashy HD touchscreen monitors you get with commercial flat treadmills. A key reason is that they are manually powered – so anything beyond a battery means you’d need a separate mains plug. While the basic consoles will track the key stats perfectly, some people prefer app integration, entertainment, and more advanced tracking. Fortunately, you’ll get this via your phone or iPad / Tablet. All you need is somewhere to put your device while you run.

Space for Water Bottles:

A minor feature compared to those above, though still important. If you are on the fence about which is the best curved treadmill for your needs, then that water bottle holder might be the deciding factor!

Bluetooth Connectivity / Apps:

The Assault Runner Pro curved treadmill allows you to work with Zwift, or with their own app. With the other models, you’ll need to get your own sensors and bootstrap something.

Zwift App

Price Point:

Let’s be honest, a curved treadmill is a long-term investment and not an impulse purchase. These are higher priced machines, even when compared to the leading regular treadmill brands like NordicTrack. You get an amazing machine for your money – and payment options are available.

FAQ for Curved Treadmills

Are Curved Treadmills Suitable for Home Use?

Yes, you’ll need a dedicated spot in your home gym or spare room as these machines are bigger than most standard treadmills. I recommend heading to a local gym to learn how to use a curved treadmill under supervision before you install one at home. This is not only safer, but it will also allow you to get the best from the wide range of exercises possible on curved treadmills.

Why are Curved Running Machines More Expensive than Regular Treadmills?

The price tag is higher as curved running machines are built to commercial gym standards. There is no comparison with the quality, flexibility, and versatility of these machines. That said, you can get models for knock-down prices – for example the Dt Bodytone Curved is on Amazon.co.uk at a price point lower than many decent regular home treadmills.

Are Curved Treadmills Mains Powered?

No, curved treadmills are manually powered. This is a key feature of their design. You can easily get them up to speed with one leg, while the other is on the wider side. They mimic real running, using your steps for traction. Curved treadmills slow down as soon as you lower your pace or step off. While you need to get used to this system (with the help of a trainer ideally), it is super-easy once you have the hang of it.

What Exercises Can I Do on a Curved Treadmill?

HIIT, sprinting and sideways / backwards running are all possible on a curved treadmill. With no maximum speed, and the ergonomic setup, these machines will burn through the calories – up to 30% better than regular commercial treadmills. It is also versatile enough to include multiple other exercises.

Can I Pay for My Curved Treadmill in Instalments?

Yes, there are easy ways to spread your purchased into more manageable instalments. Each maker partners with different payment providers (for example Klarna) to make this possible. As everyone’s financial situation is different, it is outside the scope of my site to comment on payment plans – so do make sure you speak with a financial advisor first.

Alternatives to Curved Treadmills: Incline Trainers that REALLY make you Feel the Burn

Review of the X32i Treadmill from NordicTrackAnyone on the fence about choosing a curved or regular treadmill should consider the X33i Incline Trainer from NordicTrack.

This has a massive 40% incline capability – which will boost your calorie burn and give you an amazing cardio workout. It also works like a regular flat treadmill, with a fast 22km / hour top speed, built-in fan, and Bluetooth.

What I like about NordicTrack treadmills is the iFit integration. You can do live training sessions where the trainer takes control of your speed an incline. This is a paid app, though you do get a short free trial to check out all the features.

Wrapping Up: Which is the Best Curved Manual Treadmill?

By the time you reach this section, you’ll already know more about manual curved treadmills than 99% of people.

These versatile machines were designed to solve the age-old problem with regular treadmills – the unnatural running position. They are completely human-powered, and that effort keeping them moving burns through calories at a significantly faster rate.

Budgets vary, though seeing your curved treadmill as a multi-year investment (rather than a one -off expense) helps people to choose the right model for them.

I love the Assault Runner Pro, with the unique design of the console and arms – and app integration.
