NordicTrack have long been a stylish brand.

What they did with the VU 29 bike almost demands that you turn your head and immediately look back. Those angles, the blocky, yet elegant bottom, gently curved front and big, comfy saddle just work.

Then, your eyes will hit the console. This is 14-inches of glorious high-definition. It is framed by handlebars which curve away from you and works perfectly with iFit or other popular training apps.

These new bikes not only blow away the previous models in terms of style – the spec is an eye-opener.

It is a mid-sized unit. Once assembled the VU 29 is 117cm long, 63cm wide and 140cm high. It has a wide, stable base with adjustable feet. A simple rubber gym mat is perfect underneath. NordicTrack recommend this model for users up to 147kgs – that is a little over 23 stone. Over that, it is up to the user’s individual discretion.

As with all NordicTrack exercise bikes, you need to register your purchase within 28 days of receipt to activate your warranty. This is comprehensive. You get a full 2 years for all parts and labour, plus five for the frame.

The saddle of this unit is bigger and wider than for many other exercise bikes. It is designed for more comfort than those razor-thin studio bikes – and is fully adjustable with a dial at the back of the bike and one directly under the saddle. Pedals are ergonomic, and have staps to keep your feet locked into place. You get a wate bottle holder beneath the console too.

SMR stands for ‘Silent Magnetic Resistance.’ This is the flywheel technology NordicTrack uses for their high-end bikes. Not only does this make the resistance smooth and predictable, it is quiet too. The flywheel on the VU 29 exercise bike is inertia enhanced. This means there is aways some extra under the hood for when you want to push your limits.

You get 24 digital resistance levels in total. One extra which many manufacturers forget is the built-in fan. When the summer comes, you’ll be glad you bought a model with one included.

14” HD Touch Screen and Electronics

NordicTrack include Bluetooth connectivity in the VU 29 Commercial exercise bike, this connects to the two 2” digital speakers. You can link your bike to Google Maps. This lets you cycle wherever in the world Google has mapped. The options go much wider than beautiful scenery – for example you can bike through your old neighbourhoods.

OneTouch controls work on all new equipment from NordicTrack. Just a quick jab of the finger is all it takes to switch resistance, stop, or go from relaxing peddle to sprint.

For many people, this provides that extra motivation they need to stay fit. Others prefer to enjoy music or watch TV (or YouTube) on the HD monitor instead.

This is a brand-new model, so the only feedback so far is from people bubbling with enthusiasm after discovering iFit for the first time.

Feedback for NordicTrack’s previous upright bikes is glowing. You simply can’t compare them to the rattletrap no-name junk that gets sold at places like Amazon. The price point is higher, though these bikes last for so many years without needing a replacement, that they are better value over the long run.

I will leave this space and return in 2-3 months. This should be plenty enough time to get feedback from people using the VU 29 regularly.
